Perhaps its the series that we went through in Jonah, but I have just been in complete AWE of the sovereignty of the Lord. The way He works in our lives and the details that He uses to change people, to change hearts and then to ultimately bring Him glory. Everything is this way for a specific reason… EVERYTHING.
Take a look at Jonah: Jonah intentionally disobeyed God, and sailed to Tarshish in order to run away. He did the exact opposite of what God wanted Him to do. God sent the storm, and used Jonah’s disobedience to reveal Himself to those sailors. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. (Jonah 1:16) Those men, those sailors came to believe and known in the LORD through the intentional disobedience of Jonah. This is the power of the LORD that I believe in. This is the power of the God who saves, who can use my disobedience to bring HIM glory.
A parent came up to me during the SHL dinner and asked if I would introduce myself to a teenager who was sitting at the table – who hadn’t been to church before. She was there because her sister attended the free camp and there was free food. I talked to her about volunteering but didn’t get the chance to give her an application. She showed up on Monday, after receiving an application from the chair, along with her older sister and her younger sister. She came back for another week, and told us that she would like to commit to coming for the summer, her younger sister would be coming as a camper as well.
This week she came with a list of questions: Who is Jesus? Why was He a carpenter? What is a pastor? Simple questions, and yet essential. Where did these questions come from? She told me that she had been watching testimonies on youtube. How incredible! Together we talked about the bible, we talked about the gospel, we talked about God. When I asked her how I could pray for her, she said simply – I just want to come. I just want to learn MORE about God. Is there something like the devotions that we do here, where I can learn more?
Just thinking about that conversation gives me chills – mainly because Timmy has said that he was unprepared for devotions, that they were too short, or that the volunteers weren’t as responsive as he would have liked. And YET, God used him. Somehow, God used Timmy, and his unpreparedness to speak to her, He spoke through the counsellors to open her heart, and she was able to come to WAY fellowship on friday. If she decides that she believes in Christ – that would be incredible, but simply the way that God is working, and the seed that He has planted – it is up to HIM how He is going to water it. I am still in complete AWE of how God is working in this ministry, of the way that He is deciding to use us and the way that the counsellors have shown their love for her by welcoming her and loving her. THIS GOD… is simply incredible.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that i have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age – Matthew 28: 19-20
